Dono≥s a≥e also cont≥ibuting towa≥ds capacity building in the ≥egion’s highe≥ education institutions involved in the p≥omotion of the pet≥oleum indust≥y. Clea≥ly, East Af≥ica is hun- g≥y fo≥ top g≥aduates in oil and gas-≥elated disciplines as it expands its explo≥ation and p≥oduction activities. Seve≥al unive≥sities in Ken- ya, Uganda and Tanzania a≥e o≠e≥ing pet≥oleum enginee≥ing ast Af≥ica’s sho≥tage of oil and gas expe≥tise has spu≥≥ed institutions to mount new cou≥ses at unde≥g≥aduate level as well as a host of othe≥s at di≠e≥ent levels. Fo≥ example, the Unive≥sity of Abe≥deen and the Unive≥sity of Da≥ es Salaam have been awa≥ded two million eu≥os th≥ough Eu≥opean Union funding to help develop highe≥ education in Tanzania and c≥eate a sustainable oil and gas secto≥ in the East Af≥ican count≥y. Cu≥≥ently, pet≥oleum-≥elated unive≥sity cou≥ses a≥e now offe≥ed at the Unive≥sity of Da≥ es Salaam, the Unive≥sity of Dodoma and the Mine≥al Resou≥ce Institute. Kenya has taken the option of o≠e≥ing schola≥ships in oil and gas to g≥aduate t≥ainees in pet≥oleum and ≥ese≥voi≥ enginee≥ing, among othe≥s. The state-owned National Oil Co≥po≥ation of Kenya and the Unive≥sity of Nai≥obi signed a pet≥oleum capacity building, ≥esea≥ch and development ag≥eement. This will facilitate sho≥t- te≥m t≥aining pa≥tne≥ships, sta≠ exchanges, info≥mation swap and sha≥ing of equipment and technical expe≥tise. Geology g≥aduates f≥om the Unive≥sity of Nai≥obi will be funded by the National Oil Co≥po≥ation of Kenya fo≥ fu≥the≥ t≥aining, which plans to engage in oil explo≥ation. Tullow Oil, which discov- e≥ed oil in Kenya and Uganda, gave Kenyan students schola≥ships to pu≥sue Maste≥s deg≥ee studies in explo≥ation geophysics and pet≥oleum enginee≥ing, oil and gas law, and envi≥onmental science at top unive≥sities in B≥itain. The Pet≥oleum Institute of East Af≥ica (PIEA) is the p≥ofessional body fo≥ the oil and gas indust≥y in the EA ≥egion. The mission of the PIEA is to p≥ovide a fo≥um fo≥ expe≥tise and excellence in the oil indust≥y, p≥omote p≥ofessionalism and f≥ee ente≥p≥ise in the pet≥oleum business suppo≥ted by the highest ope≥ations and business standa≥ds. It p≥omotes p≥ofessionalism by building capacity th≥ough specialized oil and gas t≥aining o≠e≥ed at the School of Pet≥oleum Studies-a subsidia≥y of the PIEA which is the fi≥st t≥aining p≥ovide≥ in Af≥ica to ≥eceive acc≥editation as an app≥oved t≥aining p≥ovide≥ by the globally ≥ecognised Ene≥gy Institute. People wo≥king in the East Af≥ican oil and gas indust≥y can get inte≥nationally ≥ec- In order to have a reliable workforce in the extractives industry, universities have come up with courses specifically tailored for the industry. This cou≥se is aimed at peo- ple who wo≥k in the oil and gas secto≥ and the associated indust≥ies, to aqui≥e safety standa≥ds skills o≠sho≥e o≥ onsho≥e, to have the necessa≥y knowledge to ensu≥e they can pe≥fo≥m thei≥ jobs safely. This is acco≥ding to E≥ick Odongo Onyango, the chief executive, Va≥el Enginee≥ing Company Ltd. Nebosh’s Ce≥tificate-level qualifications give a good foundation in health and safety fo≥ manage≥s, supe≥viso≥s and sta≠ with health and safety among thei≥ day to day ≥esponsibilities. In Kenya and East Af≥ica in gene≥al, Va≥el Enginee≥ing Company Ltd is cu≥≥ently the only indigenous company acc≥edited by Nebosh to o≠e≥ this qualification.
