fashion Nail colour in ‘barely there’ shades are great for busy women. They look professional and are hardly noticeable when they start to chip. with Sheila Mwanyigha Monday, November 11, 2013 NAIROBINEWS.CO.KE Nail polish to bring out the happy you B Different shades. Try bold colours, neon hues or even chevrons lue skies are always the perfect shade to wake up to. However on days when blue skies may not be enough, paint yourself happy with colourful nail polish. To get started, attention must be given to the grooming of your nails. A regular manicure may seem like a wasteful treat but it goes a long way towards keeping your nails healthy and in good shape. A base coat is the first layer of varnish that goes on your nails. This coat is critical as it keeps your nails from being stained by the nail polish. Once you apply the colour of your choice, finish off with a good quality top coat which will help the colour last longer, delay chipping, and keep it looking fresh. When selecting the colours to play with keep in mind the environment you are most likely to spend most of your time. Weekends are great for experiments. Try bold colours, neon hues or even the chevron — where all forms of zig-zag patterns are painted onto the nail. For a girls’ night out, a little nail swag never did anyone any harm so bedazzle with some bling. Go for gold Shades for the work week have to take into consideration the work space and work code. If you are a creative and your office allows you to express yourself, go for gold. If this is not the case and your work environment is conservative, keep nails neutral in colour. If you are scheduled for a job interview, keep nail shades neutral, as interviewers, make decisions on your personality and work quality based not only on qualifications, but presentation as well. The length of nails is well worth considering when selecting colours. Short, oval and well groomed nails, look excellent with deep classic shades such as burgundy, cherry red, navy and midnight black shades. Square shaped nails are best re-shaped, by softening the edges of the nail with a good nail file. Such nails, including long nails, look best in pastel shades. In the application of colour, whether nails are short or long, something worth trying is the ombre. The ombre is simply blending two shades of colour that are from the same colour tone, to create a depth to the look of your nails. Finally, chipped nail polish is never a good look on anyone, creatives included, so be sure to wipe off chipped colour the instant the cracks appear. 21 If you are pressed for time, it is better to go with bare nails than to walk around with chipped nail polish. Mind you... • Before you go out, armed to the teeth with the full polish kit, remember chipped nail polish is never a good look on anyone. • Be sure to wipe off chipped polish and re-apply the colour, or even better, try on a different shade. Nicely tended nails add a touch of class to your look. | Photos: Peter Cacah, NairobiNews Keep your nails clean and neatly filed all the time, nail colour notwithstanding.
