Nairobi News WriterBILLY MUIRURI sought out the new MPs and peeps into their political and personal lives and the visions they have for their constituents. Nine of the 17 have served as councillors at the defunct Nairobi City Council jubilee mps JOHN NDIRANGU Embakasi Central, TNA Main areas: Kayole, Komarock, and Fedha estates He is a former Nairobi mayor, most remembered for being in office when a multi-million golden mayoral chain was stolen in 2001. He was then Umoja councillor. A suspect was charged and convicted. The husband of two wives and father of seven lives in Fedha Estate. His main vision is youth empowerment and building more schools in the area. Age Status Where he lives 42 Married Fedha Estate JOHN NJOROGE Kasarani, TNA Main areas:Mwiki, Njiru, Ruai, Clay City The soft-spoken former councillor of Mwiki and Kasarani wards is respected within TNA circles where he was chairman of Nairobi County Interim committee. Before election, he was deputy mayor in the city. He is the chairman of the TNA city MPs. Age Status Where he lives 52 Married Kasarani Estate YUSUF HASSAN Kamukunji, TNA Main areas: Eastleigh, Pumwani, California, Airbase The former international journalist and adviser to Kofi Annan at the UN is serving his second term. He has been receiving regular treatment since surviving a terror attack last December. A look at the 17 MPs in Nairobi just makes one ponder whether being a councillor is a stepping stone to becoming an MP. It is an old tradition. The late former Embakasi MP David Mwenje and his successor Ferdinand Waititu were long serving councillors, Mwenje in Dandora and Waititu in Njiru. Former Westlands MP and cabinet minister Fred Gumo served as a councillor and chairman of the then Nairobi City Commission. Then came Maina Kamanda a two decade councillor of Ngara ward and now Starehe MP. Embakasi Central MP John 8 11 in the constituency. He says security is a major concern and an estate lighting programme is under way. The 60-year-old is a father of five, Age Status Where he lives 60 Married Spring Valley Estate GEORGE MIKE WANJOHI Mathare, TNA Main areas: Kiamaiko, Kosovo, Mathare Valley, Mlango Kubwa Born in the sprawling Kiamaiko village, the new MP is a two time Huruma councillor (1997-2002 and 2007-2012). The father of four studied at Kagumo High School in Nyeri but could not enrol for further studies. A former altar boy at Kariobangi Catholic Church, is in real estate management. His major agenda is education and sports. The 48-year-old wants to build five secondary schools. in Mathare. Age Status Where he lives 48 Married Thome Estate GEORGE THEURI Embakasi West, TNA Main areas: Umoja, Kariobangi South, Tena, Mowlem, Buruburu In his 20s, he is the youngest MP in the city. He served as Umoja 1 councillor (2007-2012). He was not ready to share his vision for his constituents with NairobiNews. “I have decided never to give any media interviews. I am that private. Please, boss, elewa (understand),” he pleaded. Age Status Where he lives 20s Married Umoja 1 MWANGI GAKUYA Embakasi North, TNA Main areas: Dandora Phase 1-4 and sections of Kariobangi North The two-term Muthurwa councillor (2002-2012) is one of the city’s known road and building contractors. The father of five says he is sick with the endless relocation of the health risk Dandora dump-site whose solution he promised within a year of his tenure. He says hygiene and a healthy environment is his agenda number one. The other is fixing dilapied roads. Age Status Where he lives 40s Married Garden Estate MAINA KAMANDA Starehe, TNA Main areas: Ngara, Kariokor, Central Business District (CBD) The former Sports, Gender and Children Services minister made a comeback after having lost to Bishop Margaret Wanjiru in the 2007 election and 2010 by-election. As Ngara ward councillor in 1979, he was the youngest in the city council. Today, at 62, he is the oldest city MP. He is married with “several” children as he puts it. Age Status Where he lives 62 Married Muthaiga WAIHENYA NDIRANGU Roysambu, TNA Main areas: Zimmerman, Githurai 44, Marurui and Kahawa West He holds the record as the youngest ever legislator for his election as Nyeri MP in 1990 when he was 22. The accountant and businessman is a resilient politician who won the seat on his third attempt. BENSON MUTURA Makadara, TNA Main areas: Makongeni, Maringo, Hamza, Viwandani He stepped into the shoes of theatrical former MP Gidion Mbuvi, now Nairobi senator, in the poorest constituency in Nairobi. A former two-term Kimathi councillor, the father of three is a businessman in the security industry and also ‘a general merchant’. He seeks to change attitude about education and improve educational infrastructure. Age Status Where he lives 40s Married South C Estate DENNIS WAWERU Dagoretti South, TNA Main areas: Riruta, Uthiru, Waithaka, Mutuini A newcomer in Nairobi politics, he is an investment banker and a father of three. He hails from Mutuini and during the campaigns, he was known as the “ second Sonko” for his generosity. The 42-year-old says his biggest worry is low academic results in the area that always comes last in Nairobi County’s Age Status Where he lives 42 Married Runda The father of three hopes to improve infrastructure, build more markets in Githurai, jua kali sheds, and empower women. The lawyer and human rights activist replaced the abrasive former Cabinet minister Fred Gumo. A former Nominated councillor in the city, he is a younger brother to Cord leader and Bungoma politician Moses SIMBA ARATI Dagoretti North, ODM Main areas: Riruta Satelite, Kawangware, Kileleshwa, Kabiru For having sold sukuma wiki at Riruta Satelite the MP is known as “mheshimiwa wa kukata mboga”. An ambitious politician, he was ODM nominated councillor (2007-2012) and vied for the mayorship against former mayor George Aladwa in JOHN OMONDI Embakasi East, ODM Main areas: Tassia, Mihang’o, Savanna, Embakasi The aviation expert is a community development worker par excellence. Having attended Dr Krapf Primary School, Omosh, as he is fondly known by his constituents, is upbeat that jobs for youths is his top priority. This will improve security TOM KAJWANG’ Ruaraka, ODM Main areas: Utalii, Mathare North, Baba Dogo, Korogocho and Lucky Summer. Kajwang’ is a lawyer and social scientist who clinced the Ruaraka seat as a first time MP. He is the brother of Homa Bay Senator Otieno Kajwang’ and a member of and enhance decent living as well as empower both youth and women. At 56 years, he is one of the older MPs within the Cord Alliance. Age Status Where he lives 56 Married Simba Villa, Embakasi Cord coalition. Kajwang believes poverty and unemployment, as well as insecurity, are a menace in his constituency. Age Status Where he lives 44 Married Mountain View 2009. The father of one wants to increase employment opportunities for the youth and to improve security in Dagoretti North. Age Status Where he lives 32 Married Kilimani Wetang’ula. Wanyonyi wants a Westlands where clean water, better education, and affordable health care is available to all. Age Status Where he lives 40s No of wives Runda cord mps JOASH OLUM Lang’ata, ODM Main areas: South C, Highrise, Nairobi West, Karen He has cut a niche in the hospitality and tourism industry as director of the renowned Somak Safaris and Boma Hotels. The father of two daughters seeks to reduce poverty in key estates so that education interests and security can be KENNETH OKOTH Kibra, ODM Main areas: Sarang’ombe, Woodley, Laini Saba,Makina Born and bred in Kibera, Okoth is only 35 years. He is married with no children yet. Okoth cut a niche as the founder of Children of Kibera Foundation where orphaned and vulnerable children are educated and mentored. The Starehe Boys Centre IRSHAD SUMRA Embakasi South, ODM Main areas: Pipeline, Mukuru kwa Njenga, Imara Daima The businessman in the glass and scrap metal industry is perhaps the most resilient politician in the city. He vied for the old Embakasi seat four times before winning on his fifth attempt. A shrewd operative, he has several factories in Industrial Area. The father of six (five daughters and one son), promises to network with Industrial Area investors and create more jobs for the youth. Age Status Where he lives 50 No of wives Fedha Estate alumni says he has laid an elaborate plan to induct young entrepreneurs to be trained on how to effectively turn their ideas to projects. Age Status Where he lives 35 Married Lavington improved. He has a programme that he says will begin to empower women and young people by the end of his first year in office. Age Status Where he lives 50 Married Karen news Ndirangu was Umoja councillor and mayor of the city in the mid 1990s. Out of the current 17 legislators, seven served in the last council. They are Makadara’s Benard Mutura (Kimathi ward), Embakasi West’s George Theuri (Umoja ward), Embakasi North’s Mwangi Gakuya (Muthurwa ward), Mathare’s George Mike Wanjohi (Kiamaiko ward) Kasarani’s John Njoroge was Mwiki and Kasarani councillor for one term each, Dagoretti’s Simba Arati (Nominated), and Westland’s Timothy Wanyonyi (nominated). Some of the MPs say serving as a councillor gives an opportunity to interact with the grassroots people. This gives a councillor an added advantage over other candidates when it comes to hunting for votes. Other observers say city councillors manage to amass substantial wealth from wheeler-dealing at the council which they use to lure voters.
