A State Department official spoke after Chief of Defence Forces Julius Karangi said the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) took custody of the remains of four terrorists who carried out the massacre. The official said FBI agents are conducting forensic analysis at “the request of the Kenya Government”. US personnel are “providing a range of assistance to ‘‘ the Kenyan Government to support the investigation of the Westgate attack,” the official said. On Friday last week, Gen Karangi said the terrorists were killed three days after the attack on September 21 last year. He said: “Speaking of Westgate, one of the media houses was only too happy to report that these fellows escaped on Saturday through a tunnel. Hear it from me, these fellows were killed on Monday morning. It (the attack) happened on Saturday. We finished them on Monday morning and their bodies are with the FBI somewhere.” However, the official neither specified the number of bodies being examined by FBI, nor identify the remains as those of the attackers. “The FBI is providing fo- It (the attack) happened on Saturday. The FBI has not responded to requests for further information on its involvement in the investigation of the attack. But the FBI report contradicts an earlier one by the New York Police Department, which suggested that the terrorists escaped. Al-Shabaab claimed that its militants carried out the attack.
