DAILY NATION Friday February 14, 2014 MIGORI | Worry over privatisation of factories Farmers want sale of sugar firms delayed Growers say they need time to raise cash to take part in bidding BY ELISHA OTIENO firstname.lastname@example.org S ugarcane farmers in western Kenya yesterday opposed the planned privatisation of mill- ing factories in the region. They said they were not ready to buy shares in the multi-billion-shilling companies. “Unless the Government has lined up foreign investors to buy the factories — which will frustrate farmers — this privatisation must be put on hold,” said Kenya National Sugarcane Farmers Union chairman Ezra Okoth. He said the region’s more than 160,000 cane growers should be allowed to buy substantial stakes in the factories so that “they have a strong CONCERNS What ails the sub-sector? Cane farmers accuse some sugar millers of illegally importing sugar and re-packaging it for the Kenyan market. The farmers also accuse the government of failing to address long-standing issues that have been affecting the sub-sector, citing sugar pricing, zoning and cane poaching. voice in their management”. “We smell a rat in this hurried privatisation which will lead to massive job losses through the expected rationalisation that will be initiated by new investors,” said Mr Okoth in Migori Town yesterday. The official said the millers owed farmers huge amounts of money that must be paid first. The government has indicated its intention to privatise Muhoroni, Chemilil, Sony and Miwani sugar factories to boost production and curb mismanagement. Block a foreigner Migori Governor Okoth Obado reiterated his commitment to buy Awendo-based Sony Sugar when it is put up for sale but urged the Government to delay its privatisation to enable them to raise cash. “Our 30,000 cane farmers will be allowed to have minority shares in the firm. The idea is to block a foreigner from buying the factory as this would frustrate our farmers and the employees,” he said. The governor said many people in the county relied on Sony Sugar for a living “and cannot be left to the whims of a newcomer who does not understand the dynamics of cane farming and sugar production”.
