The belief is that the shouting colours will attract recruiters, to the exclusion of other applications on the pile. This may be the case, but often for the wrong reasons. Don’t print your CV on coloured paper, and don’t decorate it. Clarity and conciseness are the greatest selling points. Unspecified applications However desperate you are for a job, it rarely helps to send an application with the line: “fix me on any available position”. Always specify the type of job you are confident you can do. Apply for a specific position, a position you stand a good chance of being interviewed for. Keep your options open You’ve attended many interviews and you are advancing to the next round of the selection process. You may be tempted to focus your attention on only one or two of the recruiting companies. This is not wise. Attend all the interviews you’ve been invited for with equal interest. Do not fail to pursue a vacancy just because you are receiving signals that you may get the other job. Only reject an offer after you’ve accepted another. You could, at the last minute, be dropped out of the race for the job you are keen on. Change that fancy address If your email address reads something like “cooljoe@….com” or “betty_sweet@….com”, don’t submit it as a contact address in your job application. It could ruin your chances of success. Opt for an address that reflects a serious person. The same goes for voicemail notifications: the recorded messages should be professional and courteous.
