4 young nation Children and law Why we should protect children BY PATRICIA MUNDIA email@example.com to be protected because they are vulnerable and because most of the time they are not aware of their rights. In most situations, the duty of protection is in the hands of parents or guardians and the state. This duty is to ensure that children are P not exposed to any physical or emotional danger. Examples of physical danger are where the child is subjected to forced labour, beaten up or abuses drugs. Emotional danger is where the chil- dren are subjected to conditions that make them unhappy and are neglected. This makes it difficult for them to concentrate in school. Apart from parents, members of the community also have a duty to protect children from all forms of abuse. rotection is the act of shielding or defending a person from danger, loss or injury. Children have a right Teachers, religious leaders, neighbours, health officers all have a duty to protect children and ensure that they are not exposed to any form of danger. If they suspect that a child is being abused or likely to be abused then they are supposed to report the case to authorities such as the police or children officers who can assist them. The police have a duty of ensuring that after a case is reported, it is properly investigated and evidence is collected. After investigations are made and an arrest is made then the matter goes to court if it is a criminal case. However, if it is an issue such as cus- tody or maintenance of a child, then mediation can be done between the parents by a children’s officer or advocate. Mediation is a decision made out of court that ensures that both parties get a desired outcome without having to go through the judicial system. The protection by the state comes in through the courts. Where there is sus- picion that a child’s rights have been violated, an adult applies to court on behalf of a child so that the matter can be determined. If it is found that the child’s rights have been violated, court will make a decision to ensure that the child’s rights are no longer violated. An example is where the court ap- points an officer to supervise how the child has been progressing from time to time, if it is discovered that the child is still suffering, the court will take further steps to protect the child. Children can also report to authorities if they are being mistreated or if they suspect that their friends are being mistreated. Such reports can be made to an adult they trust or to the police. Children should not be afraid to speak out because they have a right to be heard. Children should avoid eating a lot of sweets and cakes so as not to get obesity. We should also exercise a lot and play during free time. Brian Mulu Children enjoy eating sweetened foods, sweets, chocolates and yet they don’t bother to exercise which make them become obese.
