The EastAfrican 48 APPOINTMENT MAY 17-23,2014 Senior Agriculture Economist 2 Year Term Appointment - Bujumbura, Burundi The World Bank is looking for a highly organized, energized and experienced professional to serve as Senior Agriculture Economist to support the Bank’s work in the Republic of Burundi. Key priorities will be to support the Government of Burundi in the implementation of the Agro-Pastoral Productivity and Markets Development (PRODEMA) which aims to increase small producer’s productivity and market access of targeted commodities in the project area; support ongoing analytical work in the sector; support project development especially as it relates to the Great Lakes Initiative and participate in the on-going discussions on coffee sector reform and up-coming tea sector reform. The selected candidate will play an essential role in donor coordination in the agriculture sector and support Burundi in adopting a sector wide approach. In addition, the selected candidate will play a support role to other task teams across practices in project design and implementation support. From having extensive project management experience in Burundi and a track record of resolving complex issues and building consensus and delivering results, the selected individual should be well placed to advise and support other teams on local institutional arrangements and project implementation issues specific to Burundi. In light of the challenging responsibilities and difficult conditions in Burundi, the desirable individual must be a competent and experienced practitioner, highly adaptable, possess strong policy dialogue and analytical skills, and have a thorough understanding and knowledge of agriculture and rural development in Burundi and in the Africa region. The selected candidate will report to the Sector Manager based in Washington DC. Specific tasks will include the following: • Support the implementation of PRODEMA, assist with the preparation of future agriculture and rural development programs, and lend support to other relevant projects and programs in the country. • Participate in dialogue with relevant national and international agencies, non-governmental organizations and their project support teams to coordinate the World Bank’s on-going and future activities in the agricultural sector. • • Carry out analytical work and ongoing dialogue with government counterparts on national agricultural issues. Provide support to other task teams across practices in project design and implementation support. Selection Criteria: The successful candidate will be a holder of at least a Master’s degree in a relevant field/discipline - Agricultural Economics, Economics, Agriculture, or similar field relevant to agriculture and rural development. At least eight (8) years of relevant experience in agricultural or rural development, some of which should be from Burundi or from within the region. S/he should be able to dialogue effectively with senior government officials, donor representatives and civil society and other stakeholders (including the private sector).
